Prevention of school drop outs

Munchee Tikiri Shishyadhara

The largest student education support programme by a private sector organisation in Sri Lanka prevents school dropout. A special committee monitors school drop outs with an aptitude for learning, through information gathered by area representatives. CBL is sometimes directly contacted by school/child. Eligibility for financial assistance requires a background check. Prior to final approval, a CBL representative speaks to the child, parents/guardians, teachers & the principal for assurance of correct use of money granted.  CBL selects 120 dropouts annually. Those put back on track 5 years ago have excelled at the O’Level examination obtaining 10 A’s. The programme has now over 1,500 beneficiaries.
