CBL wins 5 Awards at Corporate Citizen Sustainability Awards 2015

CCcblALLCeylon Biscuits Limited (CBL) was recently recognised by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC) as one of the top ten corporate citizens in the country at the recently concluded Best Corporate Citizen Sustainability Awards 2015, walking away with 5 accolades.

CCGMDCBL also received the award for winner in the Manufacturing Sector among the best corporates in Sri Lanka.

CCLokuIn addition to being adjudged among the top ten best Corporate Citizens of 2015, CBL also walked away with the “Best Sustainability Project Award” for the development of the CBL’s Bees Honey production project which successfully revived the Bees Honey industry in the Uva Province and was also adjudged winners of the manufacturing sector under the “Best Sector Award” category.

Two of the company’s CSR initiatives were also proud recipients of a certificate of merit under the “Best Sustainability Project Award” category.  CBL “Govi Pola” for having recognised the critical need to protect its farming community and “CBL Hope” for empowering differently able youth to live with dignity while contributing to the economy.

Plenty Foods win Gold at the NAC awards 2015

PFL.NAC2015Plenty Foods (Pvt) Ltd, a subsidiary of Ceylon Biscuits Limited and the manufacturer of Samaposha brand won the Gold Award as the Best Agricultural Producer at the recently held National Agribusiness Awards 2015 ceremony at BMICH.  Mr. Shammi Karunaratne Director/Chief Executive Officer of Plenty Foods (Pvt) Limited accepted the award on behalf of the company from Mr. B. Wijayarathna, Secretary- Agriculture Ministry.

A legend moves on – Mr. Mineka Wickramasingha retires as CBL Chairman

CH.DCAfter almost 48 years at the helm of the organisation he founded in 1968, Mineka P Wickramasingha announced his retirement from the position of Chairman of the Ceylon Biscuits Ltd (CBL) Group at a recent board meeting held on 24th June.

Current Deputy Chairman Mr. Ramya Wickramasingha was elected by the Board as the new Chairman of the Group.  Mr. Mineka Wickramasingha will continue to mentor the group in his new role as President Emeritus.

In a glowing tribute to the company’s founder, the CBL Board expressed its deep gratitude for the leadership role played by the Chairman in transforming the organisation into the prestigious food conglomerate it is today with a staff of over 5,000.  The CBL Board asserted that it was largely his determination, vision and commitment that had helped the group face and overcome the many challenges it had encountered during its years of operation.

Summer Fancy Food Show 2015

Munchee awarded Youth FMCG Brand of the Year



Munchee, the flagship brand of Ceylon Biscuits Limited was once again honoured as Youth FMCG Brand of the Year at the SLIM-Nielsen People’s Awards 2015 held recently at the Water’s Edge.

Organised annually by the Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing (SLIM) in association with Nielsen, the SLIM Nielsen People’s Awards programme utilises market data captured via an island-wide survey conducted by market research firm Nielsen.

Munchee also bagged the People’s Advertisement of the Year at the same event for their Super Cream Cracker innovative Superman television commercial.

Another CSR initiative by CBL

This school situated in Deegawapitiya in the Ampara district consists of 250 children and has classes from grade 1 to 11. The school lacks basic facilities and children in the village attend school amidst many difficulties.

The school had a half built building which served as a library but without furniture or storage racks for books etc. Ceylon Biscuits Limited under the ‘Munchee Samaga Gamata Sarana‘ CSR programme undertook the completion of the building, providing all furniture needed for the library, storage facilities for the books and other basic requirements in order to complete the project.

Kalawila, Kaluthara – Bus Library

This school has been planning on constructing a school library for a very long time. However, due to financial constraints it failed. Their many efforts to make this happen was supported by the Thalangama Depot which donated a bus body for the school which they planned to use as a library.

Once again, Ceylon Biscuits Limited came to their help and completed work on the bus library providing seating and other facilities required to convert the bus into a fully functional library. Today the students of this school enjoy the novel experience of a Bus Library thanks to CBLs CSR initiative.

Karapitiya Hospital – waiting area


Karapitiya Hospital is one of the main hospitals in Sri Lanka where more than 5,000 people visit the hospital on a daily basis. People come from various parts of the country to visit patients, for treatment, admissions etc and spend many hours at the hospital. Without proper waiting area facilities, people spend time under trees or standing in front of shops facing many difficulties.

Ceylon Biscuits Limited identified the need for a suitable waiting area for this hospital and undertook the task as a CSR project. Today many benefit by this waiting area constructed by CBL.

Nelliyagama, Kekirawa – School Pavillion


The above mentioned Muslim school is situated in the Anuradhapura district with a count of over 300 children. It is an underpriviledged school that strives to increase the education facilities of the children in the village and its surroundings.

Recently the school celebrated 50 years of service to the children and was in need of a stage. CBL under its ‘Gamata Sarana’ CSR programme built a much needed pavillion for the school.

More CSR Projects under ‘Munchee Samaga Gamata Sarana’ Programme


Ganegoda Maha Vidyalaya in Elpitiya has over 1000 students and although they had drinking water available, the children underwent much difficulty in obtaining it as they had to draw the water. Ceylon Biscuits Ltd came to their help and built them a drinking water system consisting of a water tank, sinks and taps affording them easy access to drinking water.


Around 600 families live in the village of Bulathkohupitiya and the only access to the town was across this Wel Palama which was in a dangerous state of collapse. Therefore the villagers avoided crossing it as it was unsafe. Munchee Samaga Gamata Sarana undertook the repair of this Wel Palama making it a strong, usable bridge suitable for daily use of the villagers of Bulathkohupitiya.
